8TH DECEMBER 2009

I'm tall, roughly about 168cm. My hair is reddish-brown, my eyes are bordering on flame red, and I have a well toned body. The clothes I'm wearing I must say are quite cool, with a black shirt, pants and a long black leather coat that has a high collar and trails down to calf length. There is a cross around my neck, and the outfit in general highly resembles an outfit from a game called Togainu no Chi. Despite the heavy and dark material, I do not feel hot at all, and not a single drop of sweat trickles down my face.

There are many people in a large open-air gathering hall. The floor is slate grey, the air is cool, and no one is talking. Everyone is rather reserved, keeping to themselves and always looking suspiciously at the next person. Some people are dressed strangely, with skimpy pieces of cloth hanging onto only two areas of their body, the material obviously made of some animal hide or other. There are large weapons the size of a fully grown man, and small weapons that look more like kitchen knives than killing devices. Some people are covered in armor from head to toe, hiding their face from the rest, while some are merely dressed in a shirt and shorts, looking for all the world as if they were here for a slumber party. From the look of things, I easily deduce why I am here and who these people - including me - are.

Monster hunters. People who take requests from the village or city that they live in, to get rid of a certain nuisance or other that threatens their livelihood. Looking at my build and class of weapon that I am holding, I assume that I have been doing this for quite a long time, and also that I am quite high ranked in the business. I start to recognize a few people standing around in the hall. I also start to understand that we are not in a village or city, but somewhere in the desert forest. This place cannot be explained by a single location, for it has many different elements and conditions deep in itself. There might be an ice capped mountain to the right, and a desert to the left, while in the middle of that desert would be a spring with lush fields around it. This place is harsh to hunters, and if unskilled, many would most likely return half-dead.

The voice system at the front of the hall comes to life, and a voice whose gender I cannot determine starts saying out room allocations. When mine is finally called, I pick up two luggage bags containing weapons and clothes, and proceed to find my room. The base camp is rather small, with just a main hall, and two staircases to the right of it that lead to a second level, which is where all the rooms are. As the place has been built on a hill, no matter which level you are on, you will always be on ground level. I follow the piece of paper with my room number on it, and arrive at the very end of the level, a door right at the end that opens out directly to the hallway.

"Are you staying in this room too?", a chirpy voice from behind asks.

I turn only my head to take a glimpse of who the voice came from, and see that there are two girls. One girl is wearing a brown sleeveless top with blue and white inkings on the edges, with a skirt of the same colour and design, and flat boots with fur around the edges. She has short layered hair, and deep yellow eyes. Her clothes would probably be highly resistant to cold conditions, but awfully useless in hot climates. As for the other girl, I instantly recognize her. It's Genevieve... no mistake there. Her hair is let down, the sides framing her face, and she wears a simple white top with green, red and white checkered shorts. We open the door to a room that has dark red walls and checkerboard styled floor tiles. Two beds are on one side of the wall, while one bed is alone against the other side of the wall, and there are three dressers to keep our belongins, against the wall immediately opposite from the door.

As the girls unpack, I walk outside to take a look around the place. Most hunters would go to the request board to look for a mission to do, but I prefer to only take requests from high above, the rare ones that really give me a challenge. Before I can reach the main hall again, a familiar face I do not wish to see appears. It is a tall, lean man, his skin far paler than mine, making him look like some sort of vampire. His face is constantly scowling, his eyes are dead with no pupils, and his head is shaven clean. It's no wonder that his name suits his appearence so well.

"Nice to see you today, Bone" , I say with mock sincerity.

He grins, making himself look even scarier than before, and looks at me with his dead eyes. He walks toward the barrier and leans against it in a relaxed position, then looks at me again.

"I've got a little interesting information for you if I do say so myself, " he says to me in an accent that can't be placed, "it seems to me that the organization is leaving all the little schoolgirl requests to them normal hunters, and deploying skilled killers like ourselves to the real jungles. What d'you think of that!"

"I'm not sure I follow, Bone" , I reply warily, keeping a disinterested face.

"What you should follow, dear, is that if you don't want to be stuck with them little wussy kill-the-anteka missions, you'd best listen to what I have to say. Those bloody herbivorous creatures are so harmless they shouldn't even be called monsters for felynes' sake!"

He takes off his black cowl and hangs it on the barrier, revealing the scars and still fresh cuts that come with being a professional hunter.

"Apparently, dear," he continues, "They've found this here jungle out of the city that has two different dimensions. The first is that damn awful place that changes climate like you girlies change your underwear, and the second is a place that only hunters who can access a power called the Shadow can enter. Now, traditionally you'd need to have that power in ya since the day you were sucking milk out of you know where, but them organization scientists messed around with nature a bit and gone created special weapons to let us unchosen ones have the ability to enter 'the holy land'. Of course, you still need to be of a certain standard, or the device just won't activate. This other dimension y'see, it ain't no training ground, it's a damn felyne hotbed for monsters, breeding grounds and all. I wouldn't be surprised if you see two velociprey screwin' and havin a ball of a time if they be damned!"

Bone's caustic tongue never ceases to make one feel like throwing up.

"Y'see this here large field," he gestures to the wide space of yellow grass behind him, "this here ain't no normal field with bunnies and rats, it splits into two paths, the herbivores and the carnivores. You'd best ignore the herbivores, what fun can you get from a bunch of veggie sucking organisms? To the left is the carnivores' path, you head straight through that thicket and happy slappy looking rainforest, and activate your device while you're running, and you'll find yourself being wrapped around in this black bubble like cling wrap. Then you'll be in the other dimension, and it's happy monster killing buffet for us all!"

He laughs a deep, evil sounding laugh. It's safe to say that no matter how many jokes he could crack, Bone could turn the most convivial gathering into a funeral parlour. The prospect of having such a place excites me, and my hands tingle, wanting to grab my weapons from the room and ask for the Shadow device. Instead of doing that, I keep a straight pokerface, and monotonously ask him.

"Give me one of those devices, and we'll both go together,"

Bone grins again, then reaches into his pocket, and throws me a black object that greatly resembles a back massager.

"I knew you'd be interested, dear," he says, "you know we both can't resist being bathed in blood now don't you?"

My hands grip around the device, eager to try it out, but I show no emotion to his statements. We set the time to meet up, and he explains how to activate the device. Then, with no further conversation, I turn back and head for my room to rest for the night.
